Singulair (Montelukast) is a medicine used for prevention and long-term treatment of asthma and seasonal allergic rhinitis. It is also used in certain cases to solve problem of runny nose caused by allergy and to prevent asthma attacks caused by exercise. It may also be used for other conditions. Singulair is a leukotriene receptor antagonist. It works by blocking a substance called leukotriene, which helps to decrease certain asthma and allergy symptoms. Montelukast is effective medicine for adults and children as well. This drug is also helpful for treating seasonal allergies, like hay fever.
Take montelukast by mouth and swallow with a drink of water. You may take Singulair with or without food. Take montelukast daily at about the same time, even on days when you are not having asthma symptoms or allergy attacks. Follow the prescribed directions on the label. If you are taking the chewable pills, chew them well before swallowing with water.
