Ibandronate – Generic Boniva
Ibandronate is a medicine that is indicated for the treating and preventing osteoporosis. This medication is mainly prescribed to treat osteoporosis in females after the menopause. This is an oral medication that belongs to the class of medications known as bisphosphonate. Such medications as Fosamax and Actonel belong to the same class. Ibandronate medication can be taken daily or monthly. Such medications as etidronate, pamidronate and zoledronate that also belong to the class of bisphosphonates and taken in the form of injection, are usually taken every three months or yearly. Ibandronate as well as other medications that belong to the class of bisphosphonate medications prevent the breakdown of bone that happens due to the bone cells known as osteoclasts. Bisphosphonates treat and prevent osteoporosis by increasing the bone strength and decreases the risk of bone fractures.
Ibandronate comes in the dosages of 2.5 and 150 mg (tablets) and 3 mg/3 ml (injections).
The usual single dosage of this medication is 2.5 mg a day or 150 mg a month. This medication must be administered in the morning about an hour before taking first food or before taking other medications, otherwise food or other medication can interfere with the absorption of Ibandronate medication. Ibandronate tablets should be taken whole washing down with plain water. One should also not lie down for about an hour to avoid the risk of a tablet to stick in the esophagus which can lead to irritation of the esophagus.
The intravenous dose of Ibandronate medication is 3 mg every three months.
As a rule drug interaction of Ibandronate and other medication doesn’t occur. The only reaction is the interference with absorption that can occur when taking Ibandronate along with some food, calcium and iron.
According to the researches bisphosphonates can cause the damage to the foetus of animals, but there is no information if this medicine does harm to the baby during the pregnancy of the women. Ibandronate must be taken during pregnancy only if it is recommended by the medical provider.
There is no information whether Ibandronate passes into human breast milk that’s why it’s necessary to consult with the medical provider before taking this medication if you are nursing a baby.
Ibandronate is a safe medication. Nevertheless, it can cause a number of common side reactions such as diarrhea, pain in the arms or legs, back pain, and stomach ache.
